Return Runner App

GOAL:

Our goal is to reduce the hassle of having to return an item you purchased online to a physical location by providing a service that picks it up at your doorstep.

THE PROBLEM:

During our research, we discovered that one of the biggest pain points with managing one's returns is having to go to the store to do them. Therefore, we believe that by providing a service to outsource returns that we might remove that nagging thing from people’s to-do list.

MY ROLE: UX Researcher/ UX Designer

Affinity Map

I return about 50% of my online purchases.
— Emily

We found that in today’s online ordering atmosphere, needing to return something was a common occurrence, and about 70% of responders missed return windows and lost money.

Guerilla Testing

We tested the prototype using guerilla testing. We found some minor issues and amended our app until we came up with a prototype we all were happy with. The directions to start a return are pictured to the right.

During our testing we found that the “notifications on/off screen” and the “track your
return” screen were too simple. We added informational details to the prototype in order to give the user more of a confirmation experience. Those details were price, location, date, and progress.

Final Thoughts

We also found that users were confused about what was a button and what was a picture and thought the sign up process was too long. Besides a few minor fixes we needed to make, the rest of the app worked pretty well and we are happy with its new iterations.

In the future, we will need to design another interface for the drivers who will be picking up the packages for Return Runner. We also would need to install a pretty hefty navigation capability so that we are able to map drivers to the correct locations to drop off the returns. Altogether the design process was challenging and fun and we are happy with the results.
